William Percival - Chapter Detail | |
| Chapter One - A chance encounter? |
|
My first reaction was one of alarm. They were two distinquished looking gentlemen to be sure, not the usual personage enticed by my simple show. Up until that point my only concern was the small offering of coins slowly building in my rusted tabac tin, which was building far too slowly for my liking - it was going to be turgid onion soup again tonight. I still remember my stomach growling its complaint at the lack of meat in the evenings meal. The fine fare and manners of my childhood could not have seemed further away at that point. I recall pondering what more I could do to appease the crowd and a growing frustration in my efforts to improve the situation that fate had placed me in. But more of that later, I digress.
Due to a recent encounter with a burly & unscrupulous blue-bottle who was more interested in my meagre takings than any wrong doing, I must confess I was already planning my escape route. As I put my crude but graceful kite through its final manouvre and landed it, something about one of the gentlemen caught my attention. It was the studied look of appreciation and zeal in his eyes, which seemed to be focused on the movements of my kite. I instinctively felt that this was a man I could trust. It was therefore of little surprise to me when, after the crowd dispersed, he and his colleague approached me. "Good afternoon young man, I am Sadeian." he intoned with warmth, "A most impressive show, I would talk with you in private if you would. They tell me that the devilled kidneys at the Newgate Arms are excellent. If you have no prior engagements then perhaps we could put this claim to the test while we talk....." This was clearly no chance meeting. I recall casting one last glance at the alleyway I had earmarked for my escape. No, this would be far too interesting to pass up....... |
